Ricciocarpus is a floating liverwort and, like Riccia fluitans, belongs to the starry liverwort family (Ricciaceae). The plant is distributed worldwide and is therefore known as a cosmopolitan. A striking feature of this floating plant is a blackish, purple felt of hairs, which could be mistaken for roots. However, these are the rhizoids (root-replacing hair formations) typical of mosses. Ricciocarpus can be used well in unheated aquaria, as the plant is also found in the cold-temperate climate zone.
